James Hardie siding performs only as well as its installation. A correct install protects the warranty, manages moisture, and produces clean, consistent reveals. Here is what a proper James Hardie siding installation looks like.

1. Substrate Inspection and Preparation

Before any siding goes on, the sheathing and framing are inspected for dry rot, moisture damage, and structural issues. Damaged sheathing is replaced, and the wall is brought to a sound, flat substrate.

2. Weather-Resistive Barrier

A code-compliant weather-resistive barrier (house wrap such as Tyvek) is installed over the sheathing, with all seams lapped and taped to shed water down and out.

3. Flashing

Flashing is installed at all windows, doors, penetrations, and transitions — the most important detail for long-term moisture management. Proper flashing directs water away from the building envelope rather than into it.

4. Fastening
